Philippe Caza, like many Heavy Metal artists, has done plenty of covers for science-fiction and fantasy novels. In 1974, he began a long professional association with the French paperback publisher J’ai Lu (“I’ve Read”), providing cover art for French editions of C.L. Moore’s Jirel of Joiry and Abraham Merritt’s Dwellers in the Mirage. For 40 years, Caza’s unmistakable imagery has graced the covers of J’ai Lu’s editions of Isaac Asimov, A.E. van Vogt, Frederik Pohl, Robert Silverberg, Clifford D. Simak, and other esteemed science fiction authors, as well as books by French writers you might not have heard of.
You might recognize one of these Caza images as the back cover of the March 1985 issue of Heavy Metal.
We salute the Internet Speculative Fiction Database, a site any Heavy Metal reader might want to bookmark, for keeping track of all the information. Here are the Philippe Caza covers and book titles as they appeared in French bookstores (in the gallery above, we used the original English titles when we could):
